Location and classification
Musenhang is an officially registered single vineyard in Forst an der Weinstraße in Pfalz. It belongs to the Mittelhaardt/Deutsche Weinstraße area and to the Großlage Mariengarten. In the 2024 wine growing sites register, 8.0 hectares of planted vineyard area are recorded.
Topography and soils
The rising hillside lies at around 160 to 220 metres above sea level. The vineyard borders the forest. The soils are described as loamy or clayey sand with lime, or lime debris.
Climate and ripeness
The site at the forest edge is associated with good water supply as well as a long, even ripeness and good retention of acidity. It is also said to reduce the tendency of the grapes to rot and to allow for a long ripening period. According to a producer, Riesling is usually harvested from the beginning of November onwards.
Grape varieties and wine style
In the vineyard, Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Weißburgunder are grown. For the VDP classification, Riesling and Spätburgunder are listed as classified grape varieties. The wines are generally considered to be lightly structured or slender, mineral, taut and rich in extract; Riesling thereby retains good acidity and shows a long ageing profile. Musenhang is entered as an approved single-vineyard name for German quality wine designations and is classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®. This VDP classification is not a category under German wine law.
