Location and classification
Heiligenbaum is a single vineyard site in the Nierstein district Nierstein and belongs to the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The vineyard site lies above Nierstein, falls within the Roter Hang area, and is oriented south-southeast.
Soil and grape variety
The documented soil consists of loess over colluviosol. It is described as being rich in humus and able to be deeply rooted. Riesling is the predominant grape variety associated with Heiligenbaum.
Wine profile
The terroir associated with loess-colluviosol is initially described as restrained and linear, with acidity integrated into it. Mature wines show notes of yellow fruit, apple, pear, peach, chalk and smoke, as well as a medium-bodied impression.
Name and wine sites register
The name Heiligenbaum is traced back to depictions of saints that were attached to trees. The local explanation refers to Hellje, a Celtic goddess of fertility. In the Rhineland-Palatinate wine sites register, Heiligenbaum is listed as a single vineyard site in the Nierstein area and within the Großlage Auflangen; the municipality and the cadastral district are Nierstein. For the 2024 harvest, 12.1 hectares of planted vineyard area are recorded.
