Die Niersteiner Große Lage Hipping gilt als eine der besten Weinlagen in Rheinhessen. Dem Weingut Klaus-Peter Keller gehört knapp 0,6 Hektar dieser besonderen Lage. Mit über 70% Gefälle fällt der Weinberg nach Osten zum Rhein hinab. Der Boden ist von rotem Tonschiefer geprägt. Dieser verleiht den Weinen feine Fruchtaromen, umwerfenden Schmelz und ein enormes Reifepotenzial. Bereits zur Krönung der englischen Königin Queen Elisabeth II im Jahr 1953 wurde ein Wein aus dieser Lage ausgeschenkt. Das Kürzel "HM" auf dem Etikett ist daher als Hommage an die Queen gedacht und steht für "her majesty".

The vineyard Hipping

Location and classification

Hipping is an officially registered single vineyard in Nierstein within the Großlage Rehbach and the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The vineyard site lies on the Roten Hang between Nierstein and Nackenheim on the River Rhine. The registered vineyard area in Nierstein covers 22.7 hectares.

Topography and soils

The south-easterly-facing slope extends according to the VDP over 80 to 174 metres in elevation and has a gradient of 60 to 120 per cent. A regional description gives an elevation of 90 to 160 metres. Hipping is located on Rotliegend with strongly weathered, red clay slate. The soil is described as shallow to medium-depth, calcareous and stony Rigosol with limited available water retention and good heat uptake.

Climate and wine

The microclimate is shaped by the warmth of the broad Rhine and intensive morning sun. Riesling is the classified and predominantly planted grape variety in the 12-hectare site classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE. The soil profile is associated with mineral components, peach and apricot fruit, lively acidity and potential for ripeness in Riesling wines.

Historical evidence

The name Hipping is documented in a charter from 1753 concerning wineyard ownership of Niersteiner estates. The VDP also lists the former designation “Hupbuhl” from around 1550.

About the winery

Origin and History

The Klaus-Peter Keller winery is located in Flörsheim-Dalsheim in the winegrowing region Rheinhessen in Germany. The family has been involved in viticulture since 1789 and sees itself as a winegrowing family in the tenth generation. Since 2000, the winery has been a member of the VDP.

Vineyard Sites and Grape Varieties

The winery cultivates 21 hectares of vineyard area. Of this, 70 percent is given over to Riesling, 20 percent to Pinot grape varieties and Silvaner, and 10 percent to Rieslaner and Scheurebe.

Sites and Soils

Among the classified sites listed in the VDP site profile in Flörsheim-Dalsheim are Oberer Hubacker and Bürgel. The vineyards are situated, among other things, on decomposed limestone, shell limestone, clay marl, red latosol, Terra fusca and red slate.

Wine Style and Sparkling Wine

The winery describes its style as vibrant, elegant wines full of finesse that express origin and soil. The Riesling from the rock is described as a wine with a pronounced limestone character. As a VDP winery, the estate also produces VDP.Sekt.
