Kernen im Remstal

Location and landscape

Kernen im Remstal is located in the southern Rems-Murr district south of the Rems, bordering the city of Stuttgart and the district of Esslingen. The municipality belongs to the Neckar basin natural region and lies on the southern edge of the edge of the Waiblingen basin slope. The municipal area extends from 238.64 to 493.07 metres above sea level.

From the Remstal, the terrain rises from vineyards used in the lower slopes at the edge of the Schurwald up to higher forested areas. Several streams drain northwards to the Rems. Geologically, a belt of gypsum kept under loess, the lower slopes of the Schurwald Keuper escarpment and higher Stubensandstone formations shape the area; in the area of Katzenkopf, knollen marl lies above the higher terrain.

Winegrowing

The Remstal slopes and side valleys are characterised by mild winters and hot summers. Sunny slopes are used for winegrowing. Kernen im Remstal belongs to the wine-growing region Württemberg and to the Remstal-Stuttgart area.

In 2024, the vineyard area planted with wine grapes totalled 143 hectares, of which 87 hectares were with white and 57 hectares with red varieties. In 2021, Riesling was the largest recorded grape variety at 60 hectares.

Documented Stettener wine sites include Brotwasser, Lindhälder, Mönchberg, Pulvermächer and Häder. The VDP lists Stettener Lindhälder, Mönchberg and Pulvermächer as classified wine sites in connection with a producer in Kernen-Stetten.

Municipality and wine production

The present-day municipality was formed in 1975 through the merger of Rommelshausen and Stetten in the Remstal. Subsequently, following a name competition, the designation Kernen im Remstal was adopted.

A VDP-listed operation in Kernen-Stetten documents ecological cultivation and the use of old vineyard terraces. For wine production, spontaneous fermentations in wooden casks are documented, including casks that have been used since 1950 for wines from old terraces.
