Location and soils
The Gaul winery is located in Grünstadt-Sausenheim in the Pfalz wine-growing region of Germany. Northern Pfalz is characterised by a cool climate and a late ripening of the grapes. The vineyards around Sausenheim are planted on tertiary limestone.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The estate currently cultivates around 22 hectares of vineyard area in the districts of Sausenheim and Asselheim with different soil formations. Riesling is a particular focus; the first of the winery’s own vineyards was planted with Riesling in 2006. In addition, the vineyards include, among others, Pinot Noir, St. Laurent, Grauburgunder, Muscateller, Sauvignon Blanc, Weißburgunder and Huxelrebe.
Wines and cellar
Gaul produces dry white and red wines and assigns them to three quality categories. The wines are described as having fine fruit, a mineral character and cool elegance, linked to the local limestone soils. The cellar includes a barrique cellar. Dorothee Gaul is responsible for the cellar, while Karoline Gaul handles marketing and sales.
Family-run business
Rosemarie and Karl-Heinz Gaul founded the winery in 1993. Their daughters Karoline and Dorothee Gaul completed a winemaking training in Pfalz and studied viticulture and oenology in Geisenheim. Later, they joined the family business and continued running it after the death of their father in 2011.
