Location and Geography
Pettenthal is a single-vineyard site in Nierstein in Rheinhessen. It lies on the Red Slope between Nierstein and Nackenheim, immediately above the Rhine. The vineyards extend from about 90 to 170 metres above sea level and have slope gradients of around 70 to 100 percent.
Climate and Soils
The location, which is oriented to the east to the south-east, receives additional sunshine due to light reflected from the Rhine. The open Rhine-Main lowlands ensure early sun, while the eastern aspect provides protection from cold winds. In the steep sections, the terroir is shaped by red, iron-bearing slate with a fine-grained structure, as well as Rotliegend and Rigosol soils with calcareous loam and fine sand. The soils that are shallow to moderately deep are stony and clayey, store little water available to plants, and absorb heat well.
Grape Variety and Wine Character
Riesling is the most important and the VDP-classified grape variety of the 20.00 hectares of land making up this site. Pettenthal Rieslings are described as mineral, expressive and suitable for ageing, with lively acidity and aromas of peach, apricot and honeydew melon. An example is the Pettenthal GG by Kühling Gillot.
History and Classification
The cadastral name Pettenthal has been documented since 1753. Kühling Gillot describes Pettenthal as its first historic site on the Red Slope and acquired several rows of vines there in the late 1980s. Cultivation is difficult due to the steep slopes. Pettenthal is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE; the Kühling Gillot Pettenthal Riesling GG carries the designation VDP.GROSSE LAGE trocken.
