Location and landscape
Brudersberg is a single vineyard site in Nierstein, within the collective site of Rehbach, and in the wine-growing region of Rheinhessen. The site lies in a small side valley of the Roten Hang, faces south, is around 90 metres above sea level and has a slope gradient of roughly 70 percent.
Climate and soils
Brudersberg is protected from northerly winds. The south-facing orientation, the angle of the sun’s rays and the light reflected from the nearby River Rhine increase the light intensity in the vineyard. Characteristic are red, iron-bearing clay slate as well as Rotliegend/Rigosol: a shallow to medium-depth, calcareous and stony clay loam with low water storage available to plants, good warming-up potential and moderate root penetration.
Grape variety and wines
As a classified grape variety, Riesling is documented. The site profile links the wines to herbal, finely spiced and almost floral notes, mineral components and pronounced aromas of peach, apricot and honey melon. They show lively acidity, may appear closed off in their youth and have a long ageing potential.
Classification and history
The VDP lists Brudersberg as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® in Nierstein. The classified area comprises 1.19 hectares; as a VDP winery, St. Antony is recorded as farming the site. According to the VDP, the name goes back to the four brothers of the Haxthäuser Hof, who divided the estate between 1804 and 1835.
