Location and classification
The Bergkirche is an officially designated single vineyard site in the area of Nierstein and belongs to the Großlage Auflangen. It is located in the Nierstein cadastral district in the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The Rhineland-Palatinate wine sites register records a planted area of 1.8 hectares for 2024.
Site and soil
The vineyards cover about two hectares and lie at an altitude of 90 to 115 metres. The exposure ranges from east to south-east. The soil type is documented as loess over pararendzina; the soil is described as a calcareous, deep, light loam with clayey silty loam and good water storage that is available to plants.
Grape variety and wine style
Riesling is grown in the Bergkirche. For wines from this site, Riesling Kabinett and dry Riesling are documented in particular. The regional description mentions notes of yellow fruit, apple, peach, pear and citrus, as well as a comparatively slim body, a refreshing character and moderate acidity.
Name origin
The vineyard site is named after the Bergkirche St. Kilian above Nierstein.
