Location and history
Pellingen is a municipality on the western Hunsrück high plateau in Rhineland-Palatinate. The place is documented for the years 973 as Pellinc and 1036 as Pellinch. In the parish church of St. Antonius, Roman stone fragments with vine-leaf ornamentation have been preserved.
Herrgottsrock vineyard site
The officially registered wine site Herrgottsrock belongs in the Mosel wine-growing region to the Saar area and the Großlage Scharzberg. It lies in the cadastral district of Pellingen.
Saar wine and landscape
The wine landscape on the Saar is for the most part shaped by slate from the Devonian period; diabasis occurs locally. The growing season between flowering and ripening lasts about 140 days. Cooler average temperatures and a comparatively long ripening period characterise especially the Riesling, which makes up around 80 per cent of the vineyard area on the Saar. Documented wine styles range from mineral-dry quality wines to fruity Kabinett as well as noble-sweet Auslese, Beerenauslese and Eiswein.
