Der dank seiner Lage zwischen Fluss und Felsmassiv geschützte Weinberg ermöglicht in jedem Jahr die Herstellung großer trockener Rieslinge, sowie hochwertiger Auslesen. Typisch für Weine aus dem Prälat sind Mango-, Maracuja- und Bittermandelaromen.

The vineyard Erdener Prälat

Location and Geography

The Erdener Prälat is a wine-growing site classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE opposite the village of Erden Erden in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer winegrowing region. The rocky, steep and rugged south-facing slope extends at an altitude of 110 to 220 metres. The VDP states the slope gradient as 210 per cent, corresponding to about 65 degrees.

Soil and Microclimate

The soil consists of iron-rich red slate with clay inclusions; Dr. Loosen describes it as old red Devonian slate. The sheltered location on the bend of the Moselle and between the surrounding vineyards, direct exposure to the sun, and heat storage by the exposed rock create a warm microclimate.

Vines and Cultivation

The classified grape variety is Riesling. The area designated by the VDP covers 1.63 hectares. Dr. Loosen documents vines with intact roots that are more than 100 years old in the Erdener Prälat. Sustainable farming and work by hand in the vineyard and at harvest are stated for the wine produced there.

History and Wines

The Prälat previously belonged to the Treppchen vineyard site and was separated from it at the end of the 19th century. Its name recalls the winegrower’s son Prälat Professor Dr. Franz Steffens (1853–1930), from Ürzig. The site produces dry Rieslings as well as Auslese and Botrytis selection wines. Dr. Loosen links it with aromas of mango, passion fruit and bitter almond, as well as with fullness and concentration from finely weathered red slate. An example is the Erdener Prälat GGR.

About the winery

Location and History

The winery Dr. Loosen is located at St. Johannishof in Bernkastel-Kues in the wine-growing region Mosel in Germany. The estate has been owned by the Loosen family for more than 200 years. Ernst Loosen took over the winery in 1988; since 1993 it has been a member of the VDP.

Vines and Vineyards

The vineyard area comprises about 92.90 hectares and is planted to around 98 percent Riesling and 2 percent Weissburgunder. The inventory includes old, ungrafted vines. In Erdener Prälat there are vines that are up to 120 years old; some of the best sites contain vines with an age of up to 150 years.

Sites and Soils

The vineyards lie on steep slopes facing south. The cool conditions allow slow ripening and the preservation of acidity. Graacher Domprobst is very steep, oriented towards south-southwest, and is topographically protected from wind and frost. Erdener Prälat lies between the Mosel and warm-storing slate formations. Blue and red slate, as well as red volcanic rock, are documented.

Wine Style and Maturation

The winery produces Rieslings in the styles dry, off-dry (fineherb), Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese. For the dry Rieslings VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS, healthy grapes from the best parcels of the VDP.GROSSE-LAGE vineyards are selected and hand-picked; yields are limited to at most 50 hectolitres per hectare. The wines ferment spontaneously in used oak foudre casks with 1,000 to 3,000 litres and mature for at least twelve months on full lees without bâtonnage. Riesling finesse, elegance, freshness and the expression of the site are at the centre of this.
