Location and classification
Wachenheimer Rotenberg is a single vineyard site in the municipality and cadastral district of Wachenheim. It lies in the Wonnegau region, forms part of the Großlage Domblick, and belongs to the wine-growing region of Rheinhessen.
Topography and soils
The vineyards are located at an altitude of around 150 to 186 metres and face south to south-west. The soil consists of marl and pararendzina with calcareous loams and sands from deposits of a tertiary sea. The deep, calcareous clay contains a high proportion of clay that can swell and is rich in nutrients as well as strongly calcareous. Water, air and root permeability are limited.
History and wine law
The wine site has been documented since 1456 under the name am roden Berge; the name refers to the red colour of the soil. In the official vineyard register 2024, it is listed under number 730310 with 24.9 hectares of planted vineyard area. The VDP classifies Wachenheimer Rotenberg as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® with a classified area of 18.00 hectares. The property Keller is listed as a VDP winery.
Wine style
The soil profile is associated with full-bodied, powerful wines and balanced acidity. For white wines, aromas of mango, honeydew melon and apricot are described, while for red wines dark fruit and smoky spice.
