Odinstal

Location and Landscape

Odinstal is a monopole site above Wachenheim in the Pfalz. The vineyards are located at heights of up to about 350 metres, are surrounded by meadows and mixed woodland, and are close to the former basalt quarry at the Pechsteinkopf. The monopole covers approximately five hectares of vine area.

Geology and Farming

At the site, four geological formations are documented: volcanic basalt, shell limestone (Muschelkalk), Keuper and Buntsandstein. The vineyards are farmed exclusively biodynamically; the winery is Demeter-certified and has an EU organic certification. A parcel documented for Riesling 190 N.N. [Nakt] is cultivated entirely by hand without tractor access. For plant protection, plant teas, compost extract, whey and rock flour are used, without sulphur or copper.

Varietals and Vinification

The range of grape varieties includes Riesling, Weißburgunder, Auxerrois, Silvaner, Rieslaner and Gewürztraminer. In the cellar, the wines ferment spontaneously in an alcoholic and malolactic way, without temperature control. They mature for a long time on full lees, are usually only filtered minimally and are lightly sulphured before bottling. The winery describes them as having restrained fruit, a distinct structure and length; Riesling is regarded as the grape variety that reflects the site most authentically.

Classification

Odinstal has been a member of the VDP since 2021; the admission to VDP.Pfalz was decided on 30 March 2021. In the VDP vineyard classification, the site is listed as ODINSTAL, Wachenheim | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®. The classified area amounts to 4.75 hectares.
