Königswingert

Location and History

Königswingert is a documented single vineyard site in Wachenheim an der Weinstraße in the Pfalz. It belongs to the Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstraße area and lies between Wachenheim and Bad Dürkheim. The winegrowing site can be reached via the official Wachenheim Riesling tour from the surrounding vineyard areas. Königswingert was already mentioned in a document in 1496.

Topography, Climate and Soils

The documented parcels have a south-westerly orientation and slopes of around 5 to 15 percent. Königswingert is described as cooler than the surrounding Wachenheim vineyards; an open valley allows cooler night air to move through the vines. The soils consist of weathered red Bunter sandstone with significant proportions of clay as well as sand and limestone. For the higher-lying areas, loess-rich soils are also mentioned, along with red Bunter sandstone that can store heat.

Grape Varieties and Wine Style

Riesling is documented for Königswingert; it is also listed among the white grape varieties cultivated there, alongside Pinot Gris. A dry Wachenheim Königswingert Riesling is described as having fine structure and fully ripened aromas. A Riesling from the 2023 vintage shows a cool mineral character and mandarin aromas.

Vinification

A documented Riesling from the 2023 vintage was hand-harvested and fermented and matured in a combination of stainless steel and large wooden barrels. Riesling from Königswingert was also used for a sparkling wine from the 2011 vintage, which aged on the lees for a longer period and was hand-riddled.
