Location and Classification
The Niersteiner Klostergarten is a registered single vineyard site in the locality, in the municipality and in the cadastral area Nierstein within the Nierstein area of the winegrowing region Rheinhessen. The 74-hectare site lies above Nierstein at around 160 metres above sea level, belongs to the further area Roter Hang, is oriented south-south-east and is away from the Rhine.
Soils
The soil types Löss-Pararendzina and Rotliegend-Rigosol are documented. The Löss-Pararendzina consists of calcareous loess with deep, light loam and silty clay. It has a high water storage capacity available to plants and allows for good root penetration. The Rotliegend-Rigosol consists of calcareous deposits of clay and fine sand, is shallow to medium-depth, stony and clayey, and comparatively well-suited to warming.
Grape Varieties and Wine Styles
From the Klostergarten, Riesling, Siegerrebe, Sauvignon Blanc, Grauburgunder, Dornfelder and Merlot are documented, among others. These include sweet Riesling Spätlese, a gently sweet Siegerrebe-Riesling quality wine and a dry Sauvignon Blanc quality wine. The Löss-Pararendzina is associated with yellow-fruit aromas as well as notes of apple, peach, pear and citrus. For the Rotliegend-Rigosol, herbal, lightly spicy and mineral notes, peach, apricot and a lively acidity are described.
Name and Cultivation
The name of the site is linked to areas that were previously assigned to the Abbey of Nivelles. The winery Staiger states that it produces its wines since the 2014 vintage according to the guidelines for controlled environmentally compatible viticulture (KUW).
