Location and History
Obervolkach is a district of the town of Volkach in the Kitzingen district, Lower Franconia, Bavaria. The place is first documented in 906 and is located in the wine-growing region Franconia.
Vineyard Sites and Landscape
The town of Volkach lists the Obervolkach vineyard site Obervolkacher Landsknecht with an area of 80 hectares. In addition, the vineyard register gives the single-vineyard names Landsknecht and Ratsherr for Obervolkach. Above the town lies the Stettenburg vineyard site; the ruins of the Stettenburg are regarded as a local landmark.
Soils and Grape Varieties
The soils around Obervolkach are described as comparatively heavy and rich in clay. As the geological underlying material for the local wines, shell limestone (Muschelkalk) is given. For Obervolkach wines, Silvaner and Domina are documented.
Wine Style
The documented examples include dry Silvaner Kabinett and dry Domina Spätlese. A registered vineyard site name may, under German wine law and the applicable labelling requirements, be used as a smaller geographical indication for quality wine or Prädikatswein.
