Location and landscape
Miltenberg lies in the Main Valley between the Spessart and Odenwald uplands and belongs to the region Franconia. The landscape includes the Main Valley, deeply cut side valleys and steep valley slopes. Vine growing takes place on suitable, mostly gently sloping areas of hillside.
Climate and soils
The sheltered valley has a comparatively mild climate. The average annual temperature is 8.5 °C, and the average annual rainfall is about 700 millimetres. South-facing areas between Großheubach and Miltenberg form pronounced heat islands with a climate shaped by viticulture.
In the valley floor between Miltenberg and Großheubach there are gravel and sand, while on the adjacent slopes there is Upper and Lower Miltenberg sandstone. From the predominant Buntsandstein, among other soils, there developed brown earths with sandy loam, loamy sand and, locally, gravelly components.
Vine growing and history
Viticulture in Miltenberg has been documented since the 8th century. In 1619, 112 families lived from viticulture and wine trading; by 1667, this number had fallen to 45 families. The site Steingrübler is listed as a registered individual-lot designation in the Churfranken area, with Miltenberg as the associated municipal name.
