Location and landscape
Ergersheim is located in the Franconian wine-growing region, between the northern foothills of the Steigerwald and the southern foothills of the Frankenhöhe in the upper Aisch district. The municipality is at an altitude of around 326 metres. Viticulture takes place on the slopes of the Ergersheim Hills, which face south and south-west.
Soils and wine-growing
The agricultural soils were formed through the weathering of Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk and Keuper; in part, they are covered by loess. Ergersheim has around twelve hectares of vineyard area. The vineyards are historically divided and have not been consolidated. The municipality describes cultivation as close to nature and sales as direct from the farm.
Grape varieties and wine
In Ergersheim, Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Bacchus, Dornfelder, Spätburgunder and Domina are grown. The local production is referred to as Frankenwein.
Historical wine-growing
A document dated 23 December 1265 mentions income from plots of land and vineyards in Ergersheim and is regarded by the municipality as the oldest known reference to wine-growing. The Altenberg is linked to the former Altenburg as a historical wine-growing site. This was sold to the Johanniter in Rothenburg in 1291 and destroyed by the Windsheimers in 1381. In the official Bavarian directory of wine-growing sites, the Altenberg in Ergersheim is assigned to the Franconian wine-growing region under the area code MB.
