Location and landscape
Bad Windsheim is located in Middle Franconia in Bavaria, in the Windsheim Basin and where the Steigerwald and Frankenhöhe nature parks meet. The wine-growing landscape of the Franken region is characterised by gently rolling terrain with vineyards, meadows, fields and woodland. The Aischgrund is described as a sunny wine-growing area.
Viticulture and soils
In Bad Windsheim, winegrowing is documented. The name of the vineyard Rosenberg refers to the town’s long-standing wine culture and can be reached on foot. The Franconian vineyard sites lie in geological layers of the Triassic; the eastern Franconian Keuper soils are described as mineral-rich, loamy and heat-storing.
History and wine profile
Windsheim was first mentioned in a document in 741 and later developed into a Free Imperial City. In winegrowing, Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau are found in the Aischgrund, as well as Riesling and Pinot varieties in the Franconian wine landscape. Dry wines and the traditional Bocksbeutel are considered typical characteristics of the Franconian wine tradition. The Rosenberg is listed in the area Mittelfränkische Bocksbeutelstraße and in the Großlage Burgberg; certain parcels in Bad Windsheim-Oberntief belong to the Großlage Frankenberger Schloßstück.
