Location and Topography
The Halenberg lies to the east of Monzingen in the wine-growing region Nahe. The vineyard site is at an altitude of about 160 to 220 metres and has a south to south-westerly exposure. The slope gradient is approximately 20 to 70 per cent.
Climate
In summer, warm thermal air currents rise through the site. The convex, slightly protruding elevation above the vineyard diverts flowing cold air around it and thereby limits excessive overnight cooling. Because of the steep conditions and limited water availability, there is an increased tendency towards dryness in summer.
Soil and Vines
The soil consists of weathered Waderner layers, a conglomerate with bluish-grey slate and quartzite. The dry, stony conditions encourage small, high-aroma berries that are less susceptible to rot than larger, fuller berries. For the classified site, Riesling is indicated.
Classification and Wine Style
In the VDP, the Halenberg is listed as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® and covers a classified area of 8.12 hectares. The site conditions are suitable for dry, aromatic Riesling wines as well as for noble-sweet wines.
