Gloria

Ried Gloria is a single vineyard in Großhöflein on the Leithagebirge in Burgenland. The slope, which faces south-east, lies at about 300 to 325 metres above sea level. Kollwentz lists it as Glagsatz; Ried Gloria was first documented in 1570.

Kollwentz describes Ried Gloria as the highest-lying single vineyard of the Leithagebirge and as the highest wine-growing site in northern Burgenland. The altitude and the surrounding forest shape a cool microclimate and a slow ripening process up to full ripeness. In the wider wine-growing area of Großhöflein, a Pannonian climate prevails, with hot, dry summers, cold winters and a long, mild autumn; Lake Neusiedl helps to balance temperatures.

The site is characterised by poor calcareous marl of shell limestone and loamy soil with a high lime content. For Gloria, Chardonnay is documented as the grape variety. Under the Leithaberg-DAC regulation, white Leithaberg DAC can be produced from Chardonnay, provided that the grapes are harvested in the Leithaberg wine-growing area.

The yield from the site is given as 30 hectolitres per hectare. The fully ripe and healthy grapes are selectively hand-harvested. The dry Chardonnay ferments and matures for twelve months in small French oak barrels on the full lees and then for six months on the fine lees in stainless-steel tanks. Documented are pronounced minerality and finesse, aromas of yellow fruits, a fine lees note, balanced structure and a long finish.
