Ringsheim

Location and landscape

Ringsheim is located in the Ortenau district in Baden-Württemberg at the transition between the Upper Rhine Plain and the foothills of the Black Forest. The municipal area extends across elevations of approximately 170 to 309 metres above sea level.

Winegrowing on the Kaiserberg

Ringsheim belongs to the German wine-growing region Baden and is assigned to the Breisgau winegrowing area. The vines grow on the sunny slopes facing south-west on the Kahlenberg and the Kaiserberg; around 100 hectares are cultivated there. For vineyards in the Kaiserberg area, deep loess and loess marl soils are specified, with loess deposits of 6 to 12 metres.

Grape varieties and wines

In Ringsheim, among other varieties, Spätburgunder, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Müller-Thurgau, Gewürztraminer, Regent, Auxerrois and Cabernet varieties are grown. Local production includes red wines made from Spätburgunder as well as white wines made from Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Müller-Thurgau, Gewürztraminer and Auxerrois.

Historical context

Ringsheim was first mentioned in written records in 1226 as “Ringishein” in a papal bull. For the surrounding area, the Celtic use of iron ore deposits and the construction of a Roman road through the municipal area around 100 AD are also documented.
