Location and Context
Possenheim is a district of Iphofen in the Kitzingen district in Lower Franconia, and lies about six kilometres from Iphofen. The place belongs to the wine region Franconia and was first mentioned in documents in 1171.
Landscape and Climate
The landscape around Possenheim lies in the foothills of the Steigerwald. In the wider municipal area, Keuper heights bound the terrain to the north and east; they rise about 200 metres above the surrounding area. The Main region climate is characterised by a mean annual temperature of 7.5 to 8 °C and around 600 millimetres of annual precipitation.
Geology and Viticulture
The area lies at the transition from the Muschelkalk of the Franconian Plateau to the Keuper formations. Iphofen is situated on the Lower Keuper, in which gypsum is extracted. In viticulture, in particular south-easterly, southerly and westerly exposed hillside sites on layers of the Myophorien and Estherien are documented.
Mönchshütte
Possenheim is the origin of the quality wine designation Possenheimer Mönchshütte. The vineyard site Mönchshütte is listed in the Bavarian directory of vineyard sites under Iphofen Possenheim in the Schwanberger Land area and within the Großlage Burgweg.
