Location and landscape
Murr is a municipality in the Stuttgart Region near the Bottwartal and the Löwenstein Hills. The Murr Valley cuts through the surrounding high plateau landscape in the Neckar Basin, shaping the regional landscape with valley slopes and terraces.
Geology and viticulture
In the Murr Valley, Upper Muschelkalk is found. The vineyard soils of the Muschelkalk areas include, among other things, shallow, stony Rendzinas, as well as calcareous vineyard Rigosols from slope debris and carbonate rock.
History of viticulture
Historically, Murr was a settlement shaped by agriculture and viticulture. The mountain press (Bergkelter) built in 1521 and the Honatskelter first mentioned in 1685 demonstrate the local importance of winemaking.
Historical context
Murr was first mentioned in documents in 972 and, in 1302, came to Württemberg by purchase. Today, the municipality is officially assigned to the delineated, cross-municipal single vineyard site Neckarhälde, which belongs to the Württemberg wine-growing region and to the vineyard structure of Württembergisch Unterland.
