Location and landscape
Mönchberg is a market municipality in the Miltenberg district in Lower Franconia and belongs to the Bavarian Lower Main region. The town lies on a ridge in the Spessart Nature Park. The municipal area extends from 252 to 511 metres above sea level and includes hills, forests, meadows and floodplain areas.
Soils and natural area
In the documented area of the Aubachtal, Vega soils formed mainly from silt to clayey loam shape the subsoil. On the slopes, Braunerde and Parabraunerde soils occur from loess clay, while the higher slopes are characterised by gravelly sand and sand from sandstone. Unsealed areas there can produce cold air that flows northwards along the slope.
History and wine-growing sites
Mönchberg was linked to the Electorate of Mainz for around 800 years and received market rights in 1367. Since the dissolution of the Obernburg district on 1 July 1972, the municipality has belonged to the Miltenberg district.
The wine-growing site Ölschnabel is assigned in the official wine-growing sites directory of Zeil am Main, the district of Ziegelanger and the Abt-Degen wine valley. As Ziegelanger Ölschnabel, it belongs to the Großlage Zeiler Kapellenberg.
