Mainsondheim

Location and landscape

Mainsondheim lies on the left bank of the Main, around two kilometres opposite the town centre on the other side of the river. A ferry provides the direct connection across the Main. The place is situated on the Main floodplain and is separated from the surrounding higher-lying terrain by the river.

Natural features

The landscape around Mainsondheim is shaped by sandy areas of the Main floodplain. The place is characterised in particular by its location in the floodplain and by market gardening.

History

In the area around Mainsondheim, there was already a settlement during the Bronze Age around 1000 BC, as indicated by a nearby urn graveyard. The first documented mention dates from the year 1113. As part of the Bavarian territorial reforms, Mainsondheim was incorporated in 1974 into a larger municipality.
