Location and context
Köhler is a district of Volkach in the Kitzingen district in Lower Franconia, Bavaria. The place lies in the landscape of the Volkacher Mainschleife on the River Main and belongs to the Maingau climate zone, which is locally described as one of the warm and dry climate zones in Germany.
Landscape and viticulture
The settlement lies between the Main floodplain and the Fürstenberg, which rises to around 240 metres above sea level. The Escherndorfer Fürstenberg associated with Köhler extends across the cadastral areas of Escherndorf and Köhler. The slopes, which face south to south-east, have gradients of about 30 to 50 per cent.
Soil and grape varieties
The vineyard site comprises Upper Muschelkalk, Lettenkeuper and loess marl. For the Escherndorfer Fürstenberg, among others, Silvaner, Scheurebe, Kerner, Bacchus, Spätburgunder and Domina are documented; as classified grape varieties, Weißer Burgunder, Chardonnay and Gelber Muskateller are also listed. The site is classified as a VDP.ERSTE LAGE®.
History
Köhler was incorporated into the town of Volkach on 1 July 1972.
