Location and character
Klosterforst is a cadastral district of the town of Kitzingen in Franconia and is not an independent town or wine-growing municipality. The wooded area lies within the natural regions Steigerwald foreland and Middle Main valley, within the Main Franconian plates.
Soils and natural region
The area is characterised by terrace gravels, terrace sands and windblown sands. The soils associated with these are sandy, low in nutrients and, in part, developed as podsolised brown earths. Parts of Klosterforst belong to the FFH site Sand areas near Schwarzach, Klein- and Großlangheim, and to the EU bird protection area Southern Steigerwald foreland.
Name and wine-growing
The name Klosterforst refers to the historical link between the forest and the former Benedictine nunnery in Kitzingen. The Herrgottsweg, on the other hand, is officially assigned to the municipality of Albertshofen and there belongs to the MainSüden wine-growing region. In Albertshofen, the vineyard site covers about 16 hectares; viticulture was restarted there after a period of decline.
