Location and viticulture
Ellhofen is a wine-growing municipality in the Württemberg wine region. The municipal centre lies at an altitude of 181.0 metres above sea level, while the Ketzersberg area reaches 253.0 metres.
Geological subsoil
In the documented area, gypsum keuper of the Grabfeld Formation forms the subsoil. Near the Sulm, it is overlain by younger valley deposits.
History of viticulture
Ellhofen was first mentioned in a document in 1037. Viticulture has been documented since 1264; a contemporaneous record mentions an annual delivery of two buckets of wine, approximately 600 litres.
Name of the single vineyard
For wines from the single vineyard Wildenberg, from the 2026 vintage the designation “Ellhofener Wildenberg” may be used if the prescribed provenance of 85 percent from Ellhofen is met. Under German wine law, for quality wine and related protected categories, the municipality or place name must stand immediately before or after the name of the single vineyard; supply to consumers is, in principle, only permitted from 1 March of the calendar year following the harvest.
