Location and Climate
Cuisles is a wine-growing village in the Champagne region and lies in the Vallée de la Marne. The region has a temperate climate with oceanic and continental influences. The average annual temperature is about 10.4 °C, annual rainfall is around 650 to 750 mm, and it is distributed regularly throughout the year.
Vineyards and Soils
The vineyards of Cuisles are situated on sunny slopes, which are predominantly oriented to the south-east. In the subsoil, green clay and limestone are found; the clay can store moisture during dry periods.
Grape Varieties and Wine Styles
Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are grown in Cuisles. Meunier is the most important grape variety for several local producers. The resident producers make, among other things, Blanc de Noirs, Blanc de Blancs, Rosé d’assemblage and Rosé de saignée, as well as Champagne in the styles Extra Brut and Brut Nature.
Wine-Growing Tradition
The Moussé family has been based in Cuisles since 1880. In 1923, Eugène Moussé produced the family’s first bottled Champagne; in 1926, marketing began. Champagne Moussé Fils has been greening its vineyards since the transition to organic farming and, according to its own information, has not used any synthetic pesticides since 2014. In 2009, an ecologically designed production cellar was built.
